Special Education

Horton maintains a full range special education program that serves students at all levels with varying needs. Our mild-moderate program places student in general education classrooms with necessary gen ed supports and also provides different environments for learning when call for by a child's IEP. We have 3 full time special education credentialed teachers that can serve resident students having Speech and Language needs, Learning Disabilities, Autism, Intellectual Disabilities and numerous other diagnosed conditions identified on an IEP. Our general education staff strongly supports children with IEP's learning in the gen ed environment when it is meeting their needs academically. A psychologist regularly works at our school to provide behavioral support and to evaluate students who are recommended for assessment through our Student Study Team process.

The San Diego Unified School District is committed to providing young children and eligible students with disabilities a free and appropriate public education consistent with federal and state laws. These laws require the district to identify, locate and assess all students within the district from birth to 21 years of age who may have disabilities, and to provide appropriate support and services to those eligible.

Special Education support and services are provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 . The delivery of special education services in the San Diego Unified School District is described in the district's Local Plan for Special Education .
