Alonzo E. Horton Elementary School
Alonzo E. Horton
On November 29, 1960 our school was dedicated to Alonzo E. Horton. 2017 marks the 57th year that our school has been dedicated to Alonzo E. Horton.
Born in Connecticut, October 24, 1813, Alonzo E. Horton came to California in 1851 at the age of 38. Sixteen years later he came to San Diego with plans that changed the course of our city. Within a period of forty years he saw San Diego change from a sleepy little village of 700 to a prosperous thriving city of 40,000.
He was always alert to the needs of his city and met every emergency with faith and courage. He has been called the father of modern San Diego.
He died on January 7, 1909 when he was ninety-five years old.
