Dear Horton Students, Families, and Community,
It is with excitement and enthusiasm that I introduce myself as your new principal. I feel humbled and honored that you have entrusted me to lead the work for high academic achievement for all students at Horton Elementary.
I am a native San Diegan and a product of San Diego Unified schools. I grew up in Mira Mesa and attended Sandburg Elementary, O’Farrell School of Creative and Performing Arts (now San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts), Wangenheim Junior High, and Mira Mesa High School. I am also a first-generation college graduate and a San Diego Education Fund recipient (college scholarship program supported by San Diego Unified). I attended SDSU for my undergraduate and graduate studies, earning Bachelor of Arts degrees in Liberal Studies and Spanish Language and Culture, and a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics. In addition, I had the opportunity to study and live abroad in Spain while in college.
I began teaching 20 years ago as a bilingual teacher, first in Spain, and then as a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher at Audubon Elementary in Southeast San Diego. I then supported language learners as an English Learner Support Teacher at Euclid Elementary in City Heights and Sherman Academy in Sherman Heights. I also worked for a non-profit education agency, WestEd, where I supported schools and districts across the state to strengthen their instructional programs to improve outcomes for students, especially English learners. My most recent work has been as an assistant principal in the Lemon Grove School District. I have been married eighteen years to my husband Francisco (Paco) and have two sons; Steven began his education in San Diego Unified at Sherman Academy and is now a sophomore in high school, and Santiago is in third grade and attends Sherman Academy.
As a learning community, we have a shared responsibility to support each and every student in their educational journey so that they have all opportunities afforded to them as they move into middle and high school, college and or career path, and beyond. Alongside Horton’s dedicated teachers and staff, I will work diligently to support and take special care of each and every child.
I know that this is a difficult time for students, parents and staff and the usual back-to-school routines have been disrupted for all of us. I am confident that as a community we will problem-solve, adapt, and overcome challenges to make this a successful year for our students. We will do whatever it takes to ensure that everyone’s health, safety, and well-being come first during this upcoming school year.
It’s important to me that everyone who walks through our doors or virtual classrooms feels welcome. I look forward to meeting and welcoming back every single student, family and staff member. I have an open-door policy, so please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns, ideas you’d like to share, or even just to say “hello.” As we get closer to the first day of school, more information will be forthcoming about distance learning, class assignments, and other back-to-school related topics. Until then, I will be working hard with our staff to prepare for a strong and successful start to our school year.

Estimados estudiantes, padres de familia y miembros de la comunidad de Horton:
Con mucho ánimo y entusiasmo me presento como su nueva directora. Me siento alagada y honrada de que me hayan dado su confianza para guiar el trabajo hacia la excelencia académica de todos los estudiantes de la primaria Horton.
Soy nativa de San Diego y producto de las escuelas del Distrito Unificado de San Diego. Me crie en Mira Mesa donde asistí a la primaria Sandburg, a la Escuela de Artes O’Farrell (actualmente San Diego SCPA), posteriormente a la secundaria Wangenheim y me gradué en la Preparatoria Mira Mesa. También soy la primera generación de graduados universitarios en mi familia y becaria por el Fondo Educativo de San Diego (un programa becario de San Diego Unified). Me gradué por la Universidad SDSU en Liberal Studies (Educación) y Lengua y Cultura Española. También en SDSU realicé mis estudios de posgraduado y obtuve un título superior en Lingüística Aplicada. Durante mis años de estudios en la universidad, tuve la oportunidad de participar en un programa para estudiar y vivir en España.
Empecé como maestra bilingüe hace 20 años; primero, durante dos años en España; luego, regresé a San Diego y comencé como maestra de 2.o y 3.er grado en la Primaria Audubon en el sureste de San Diego. Mi siguiente puesto fue como maestra especialista de apoyo a los aprendices de inglés, trabajé en la primaria Euclid en City Heights y en la primaria Sherman en Sherman Heights. También trabajé para una agencia educativa, WestEd, donde apoyaba a diferentes escuelas y distritos de todo el estado para reforzar sus programas educativos, especialmente para aprendices de inglés. Más recientemente, he trabajado como subdirectora en el distrito de Lemon Grove. Llevo casada dieciocho años con mi marido Francisco (Paco) y tengo dos hijos; Steven, que está en décimo grado, y Santiago, que está en tercer grado y asiste a una escuela en San Diego Unified.
Somos una comunidad de aprendizaje, y por lo tanto tenemos una responsabilidad compartida para apoyar a cada estudiante en su trayecto educativo para que tenga todas las posibilidades en la secundaria, la preparatoria y la universidad en su camino para acabar su carrera y más allá. Junto con los dedicados maestros de Horton, trabajaré con mucha diligencia para apoyar y cuidar a cada estudiante.
Reconozco que atravesamos tiempos difíciles para los estudiantes, el personal de la escuela y para las familias, y que las típicas rutinas de regreso-a-la-escuela han sido alteradas para todos. Tengo la confianza de que juntos vamos a solucionar los problemas que surjan, nos adaptaremos, seremos flexibles y superaremos los retos para que tengamos un año de éxito para nuestros estudiantes. Haremos todo lo posible para asegurar la salud, la seguridad y el bienestar de todos los estudiantes y el personal.
Para mí es importante que cada persona que entre en nuestra escuela se sienta bienvenido. Espero con mucho gusto conocerlos y darles la bienvenida a cada estudiante, familia, y personal de la escuela. Tengo una política de «puerta abierta», así que por favor no duden en contactar conmigo si tienen cualquier duda, inquietud, ideas que les gustaría compartir o, simplemente, para saludar. Les mantendremos informados sobre el aprendizaje a distancia, asignación de clases y otros temas relacionados con el regreso a la escuela. Hasta entonces, estaré trabajando y colaborando con el personal para preparar un comienzo exitoso de nuestro nuevo año escolar.
